Advice To High School Students (Please Read!!)
well im a U.S high school student..well just graduated like 2 days ago..
soon to be IMG (internation medical school graduate) and im very determined as well
as hardworking. So I went to the library today and starting looking at some USMLE Step books first aid and that kinda stuff; So I just wanted alittle advice..
i took AP Biology and AP chemistry this year, and studying pyschology and biochem over the summer. Im mainly worried about the USMLE , is there anything i can do right now in terms of preparing myself to have an advantage when i take it, probably after my 2nd or 3rd year of medical school, the stuff in the USMLE book was alittle intimidating but do able i guess, but am i on the right track?
what scared me the most was the 50% passing rate of IMG's
but im studying in Pakistan from Shifa, one of theiir best medical schools,
so if anyone can be kind enough to give me some advice to relieve the stress,
give me some advice as to how i should prepare myself, as in get a job in clinical work, study-this-that, do this-that, that would be a HUGEEEEEEEE help!!!
please reply as soon as you read this, i will be refreshing like a madman!! : )June 20th, 2011, 11:17 PM #2
on the other hand im graduating in like 3 more days!!! am from u.s too and seeking admission in pak-med school. did you take entrance exams etc...? it was mostly science aptitude questions? mind helping me here becuz i have no idea about the test . i'm going to try-aku and some other med-schools here and there...aany tips on that? i know i should have taken ap but instead i chose to take physics chemistry and biology in one year (for a year early graduation) and grades are great!!!!June 22nd, 2011, 01:32 AM #3
well..haha..if you read, you would have noticed i was particularly asking anyone who has experience in that level..
and AKU admissions for 2011 admission are over..i got on the second list, but im not trying to keep my hopes up,
and for the rest you'll have to take subject tests,
have you taken any?
if not, they will be administered next year now..June 22nd, 2011, 08:58 AM #4June 22nd, 2011, 08:17 PM #5
the subject test if your asking, i felt was alittle more difficult than the AP exams
i took AP biology and i wrote the subject test, i get my score tommorrow,
i took AP chemistry and I got a 680 on it, damn those 20 points haha..
and im getting my Math II results tommorrow,
you basically have to use the barrons or princeton books and do practice questions
and familiarize yourself with the test taking settings. The questions will not be exact, and you can't guarantee that you know everything. You'll need to start atleast 1 year earlier in prep if you want to do very well and master the subjects.
For the AKU entrance test, you might wanna ask your relatives in PK to send you the MCAT Dogars book and FSE books, i was at disadvantage, b/c i found this out later that its not based on Subj tests like everyone says, after taking it i realized it was all O levels, which was pretty difficult except for the English, Mathematics and Science Reasoning. The physics and chemistry are at a pretty high level, and need atleast a year worth of studying to excell in. I got second listed b/c i didnt score high enough, but it was alright so if anyone drops AKU then i have a chance..
I hope you found the advice helpful!June 22nd, 2011, 08:18 PM #6
Fsc books* not FSE books sorryJune 23rd, 2011, 08:19 AM #7
wow appreciate your help and hopefully you'll get inshalalh....i actually went to barn&nobles and took a look around for a while...i think kaplan books are pretty good to.....i find pak edu system really complicated i mean o level gce something levels nd fsc blah blah .... to get into medical school you'll have to have a really competitive score or otherwise you just wasted a year..my cousin passed but other students were ahead of him...i feel kinda bad for him nd now hes retrying (June 23rd, 2011, 04:48 PM #8
yeaah i knoww : (
but Kaplan books are great too, not better than Barrons,
however, but you need to stick to only ONE
don't do a whole bunch of books,b/c it will stress you out and confuse you
just master 1 for each subjecttJune 25th, 2011, 11:38 PM #9

Agreed, enjoy your time off. It will be a waste of time right now to start studying for STEP 1 because you haven't covered the material before and it won't be worthwhile.July 25th, 2011, 07:33 PM #16
