Hi everyone!
I really liked the close-knit and international atmosphere here and decided to join...
1) I'm in 4th-yr BSc Microbiology & Immunology at UBC, Vancouver, Canada.
I'm applying to med right now, despite what my nickname says
2) Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, maybe Otolaryngology
3) I have been interested in microbial diseases and immunity for a long time, which led to my current course of study. Recently, I've been fascinated by tropical diseases, such as fungal and parasitic infections, which I know almost nothing about. Within ID, I like the challenge of diagnosis, intervention without surgical tools (not always), and the idea of the "war against microbes". I also like the global aspect of the field, and the wide variety of opportunities that one can pursue.
As for otolaryngology, I've had past experiences seeing ENT specialists, which has peeked my interest in the upper respiratory/auditory system.
4) I have the ability to remain calm in intense situations, I can think critically about different things, I can listen to people, and I have a good memory. I have a diverse variety of interests, including classical music, web design, and ice hockey.
5) Not surprisingly, getting med school is the first step...I've looked through USMLE books in Medical Microbiology, and as a med student I plan to take overseas electives and pursue opportunities in ID through clinical electives or research.
6) I would like to be based in Europe, yet also work in Africa and Latin America.
7) Not at this point. In addition or in place of a hospital position, I would like to be part of an international government organization such as the WHO, or relief/humanitarian organization such as Doctors without Borders. Maybe I will help set up clinics in resource-poor areas.
8) In 10 years, I will have finished medical school and residency (God-willing), and will probably be pursuing a Diploma in Tropical Medicine, or Master of Public Health.
I look forward to becoming more involved in this forum in the days to come!
Cheers
