Discussion of some confusing questions.
a women of mass 5o kg wishes to escape from a burning building by sliding down a rope tied to a water pipe at the top of building . the max upward force that the rope can exert without breaking is 400 N . what is the least acceleration with which the women can slide down the rope ?August 27th, 2012, 06:04 AM #2

*Since the question doesn't mention the coefficient of friction, I am assuming the force of friction is negligible.
*I am making the downwards direction negative (-) and the upwards direction (+).
Since the rope can only support 400N, according to Newton's third law, force upwards must equal the force downwards. Therefore, the net force is 400N downwards.
Fnet = m a
-400 N = (50 kg) a
- 8.0 m/s^2 = a

the correct ans is 1.8m/s^2 .
here we have to use the concept of real and apparent weight just like the cases of elevator .
