Hey!

So ive applied to medical schools in Pakistan, and im waiting for acceptance's. in the meantime, im preparing stuff, and I want to know if you can get the iphone in Pakistan? the iphone 4s or the iphone 5. And do they come with some sort of data plan like they do here? If I bring an iphone from America, will i be able to use it as a phone by putting a sim in it? will it be able to catch wifi? what my best bet if i want to have a smartphone in Pakistan? Thanks!

The cell phone industry in Pakistan is years ahead of the United States in terms of consumer freedom and choice. As long as you bring an unlocked GSM phone to Pakistan you can buy a prepaid SIM for any carrier and be using your phone within minutes. Cell service carriers in Pakistan don't bundle phones with their service plans like they do in the U.S. and there are no two year contracts you must sign. You buy your phone separately, then choose the carrier you want to use and just get a SIM and prepaid card. Also unlike the U.S. there is tons of competition here so prices are always dropping.

Now for the bad stuff -- there is no real 3G or 4G data network. Data transfer rates are SLOW. Also, buying an iPhone or any other phone here will most likely cost you more than if you were to buy it factory unlocked in the U.S. The best advice is to buy an unlocked phone from the U.S. and then just get a phone number when you arrive.

You'll be able to use WiFi anywhere that it is available.

The competition and choice of carriers for consumers in Pakistan is definitely superior than most countries in the West however the technology is inferior. Pakistan still does not have a proper 3G data network whereas most of the West is in the processing of deploying or have already deployed national 4G networks.

Hopefully Pakistan will be able to catch up soon though.
