Can you place in a USA Residency the year you graduate?
Ok so hypothetically speaking is a person able to place into a residency match the year they graduate from Pakistan and attain their MBBS being right after they have given their UHS exams.
I ask because there are seniors in my class who take step 1 3rd year and then step 2ck/cs their 5th year. Now they fill one requirement to practice in the us which is passing the USMLE but the problem is that The 5th year exams are like in February after the 5th year has ended (start of 6th year) and have like 7 parts to it and a viva. Now a friend was telling me that the exams end in like at end of February. Which means that the MBBS degree is granted in March and or later (*not sure please correct me if I am*). Now a person who wishes to match that year has to submit his rank order list by Feb 21st, if parts of it are incomplete like test results and an accreditation degree than the person is taken out of the Match program for that year.
So please clarify this is it like timely impossible to place into a residency the year you complete your MBBS degree granting that you clear all steps that are required for placing into a residency well ahead of the date and the only thing holing you back is attaining that UHS degree????February 14th, 2008, 04:23 AM #2
Though I'm not a hundred percent sure on this, I'm pretty sure you can apply even if you haven't received your degree yet as long as you've taken steps. There are a lot of people who'll apply without even finishing step two since by the time all the interviews are over they'll have taken that as well.
I don't know of any school that has fifth year exams in February, except for supplie exams. Most schools finish in November and have graduation in December. It really makes no difference when you finish your degree or steps since what really matters is whether or not you'll be there in time for interviews, otherwise there's zero chance of you getting anything, except maybe a thank you card. I doubt you'd be able to leave the last few months of final year to go for residency interviews.
It's not impossible, but I don't see a practical way of it happening.February 14th, 2008, 07:46 PM #3

Different schools do seem to have quite a different timetable in terms of when their final year students begin and end the year.
In order for you to register for the Match you must first be completely cleared by ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates). In order to be cleared by ECFMG you must in addition to meeting other requirements have passed the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CS and the Step 2 CK.
In terms of how long it takes for the entire ECFMG process to take place, this is from their website:The time required to complete the certification process is different for each applicant. You may apply for the required exams as soon as you meet the eligibility requirements for examination. All of the exams required for ECFMG Certification are offered continuously throughout the year.
Both medical school students and graduates may begin the certification process. However, since one of the requirements for ECFMG Certification is that your final medical diploma be verified by ECFMG with your medical school, you cannot complete the certification process until you graduate. The time required for some aspects of the certification process, such as the time required by your medical school to verify your medical education credentials, is beyond the control of ECFMG.April 19th, 2013, 05:31 PM #5
So basically there's no feasible way to get residency in the immediate year after graduation? Has anyone ever been known to do this?
