Default Please answer (pre-req's/mcat for American med schools)

hey evryone i'm daisha and i'm interested in doing medicine. but in jamaica I do GCE Advanced level Biology,Chemistry and Physics in high school where we basically learn the same topics i would probably learn in pre-med. i figured this from a practice MCAT test i took online. SO Do people have to dopre_med before they go to medical school or can they just take the MCAT’s

Daisha,

Most schools in the US require med school applicants to have completed a 4-year bachelor's degree with certain "pre-med" requirements before applying for admission.

Usually those pre-med requirements include:

2 semesters of general chemistry w/ lab
2 semesters of general physics w/ lab
2 semesters of calculus
2 semesters of general biology w/ lab
2 semesters of English
2 semesters of organic chemistry w/ lab

If you can prove through your coursework transcripts that you have met these requirements through the classes you completed in your O/A Levels, then you may just have to take the MCAT exam....although I'm not sure so please check with someone else also!

Hi Daisha,

You are studying for the same sort of exams as I did! Rehan's right about the US and you are right about the A Level's being a similar level of difficulty as the MCAT.

You would have exactly the right qualifications to apply to medical school in the UK but would then have to complete the USMLE if you wanted to practise in the US. After medical school in the UK, to continue to practise here there's a year's 'internship' before you are registered as safe to practise followed by another year of training (similar to a first year residency) before you begin a specialised residency-type program.

If you have any questions about med school in the UK, give me a shout!

Like Rehan said, those are the basic requirements for applying to med schools...but you can check with the school you are planning to apply to and let them know your situation and if they will accept your transcripts like that and then the MCAT scores...

good luck!
