Default Undergraduate Majors

I'm hearing a lot about med schools liking applicants who aren't the typical premed (ie bio/chem).

I heard they are looking for well rounded students who may have majored in a non science like say English and minored in Bio or just fulfilled prereq's.

Anyone care to shine some light?

The most commonly accepted major is Music.

I read that history was the most accepted like around 55% versus 39% for bio/chem.

But Music is really out there. I was thinking of Philosophy, Sociology, or Psychology. First two are traditionally pre-law majors but I'm interested in both.

Personally, I am in Psychology. I do find it interesting that Music is the #1 accepted major though... Probably correlates to how schools usually look for diversity in their perspective students.

A lot of the classes required for your psychology major are also part of the pre-med requirement, right?

I'm finding that it fits together pretty well, but it may depend on the school. I go to a really small private school in the middle of nowhere, so they're a lot more informal than a big state school is likely to be. My roommate this year was a psych major, whereas I was psych + premed and I had quite a bit more work than her, but I wasn't dying from an overload or anything. A helpful thing that my academic advisor talked to me about was pushing all my non-MCAT-related classes to my senior year after I take the MCAT. That way, instead of taking english and electives before the MCAT, I can spend more time learning what I need to for the MCAT and spend my senior year taking pretty much all of my humanities classes and working on my senior thesis.

Actually, music being the #1 accepted isn't that surprising. Musical people are usually logical and mathematically inclined. My advisor told me to take classes like music and art to show that I have dexterity. I chose ceramics because I've been a drummer all of my life.

trust me on this, ur undergrad major does NOT matter. the only things that matter are :
ur undergrad GPA, ur science GPA, and ur MCAT. and u have to have a bit of healthcare exposure, that counts as well. if u r good here, everything else is pretty much secondary.

I'm toying with the idea of getting my BSN, any thoughts on that as a pre-medical major?
